It was back to normal in many ways at Luxury Leisure as 2021 saw the operator emerge from lockdown with ‘strong trading’ and a hamper full of new initiatives. Back on the greenfield site acquisition trail, new health and well-being programmes and venue refurbs have been packing the end of year schedule. Paul Hyman explains.




Coinslot: A year that opened in lockdown, staggered through to reopening, via a supply chain crisis and ending with Omicron: how will you look back on 2021?

Paul Hyman: It was a year of two halves! We met the Covid challenges head-on by taking a proactive approach to ensure ‘match fitness’ for reopening the business on 17th May.

We are grateful for what support was released by Government through furlough and rates relief, prepared well for our reopening and were met with better than expected reactions from our customers. This has resulted in strong trading for the remainder of the year.

Coinslot: We’ve had five months since re-opening, what were your highlights of the year?

Paul Hyman: May the 17th was the real highlight, allowing us to get all our colleagues and customers back and the industry reopened.

Coinslot: 2021 has been a major challenge to the way our businesses operate. How have you risen to this challenge and what new developments are you introducing to rebuild and strengthen your operation?

Paul Hyman: We took every advantage during lockdown to communicate more efficiently and regularly with all colleagues.

We have seen the longer term benefits in this investment which we’ve continued with post-reopening.

Our in-house learning and development programme Admiral Academy has really shone during this period and kept our colleagues engaged and focused.

Health and wellbeing colleague programmes have also been a vital initiative throughout the lockdown periods and beyond.

As the business reopened fully, we were able to recommence investment programmes in greenfield acquisition, venue refurbishments and products and games.

Coinslot: What are you looking or hoping for in 2022 and what’s on your New Year’s wish list?

Paul Hyman: Continually expand our operational footprint while retaining our market leading position (in venue numbers and revenues). And, of course England to win the Ashes!
