Merlin Entertainments has announced plans for a new “exhilarating” ride at Thorpe Park, the first new attraction at the Chertsey resort since The Swarm opened in 2012.
Though currently unnamed, the proposed 236ft roller coaster could become the UK’s tallest if it is approved for construction, with a predicted opening date of late 2024. “Thorpe Park Resort aims to continue to invest in the Park’s attractions to encourage more people to return to the Resort now that the tourism industry has re-opened,” said a statement from Merlin.
“This key investment and the introduction of new attractions is critical to the Resort’s recovery from the Covid-related impacts on the business. With this in mind, we are delighted to announce that we are proposing to add an exciting new rollercoaster to Thorpe Park Resort’s portfolio of world-class attractions.”
The proposals were first unveiled to local residents on 9 December, as part of a month-long consultation period which seeks to canvas feedback prior to the submission of a planning application in early 2022.
The new ride comes as Merlin seeks to expand and update its attractions offer, stating “the Covid-19 pandemic has had, and continues to have, a significant impact on admission numbers to the Resort.”
