Majestic Bingo’s Mark Jepp is not one to pull his punches and his review of 2021 fits the bill. But no matter how frustrating he found the government’s response to Covid, his enthusiasm for the challenges ahead will not be curbed. New products, new initiatives, new comms: Majestic is heading into 2022 full of ideas. And making bingo great again is top of that list.

Coinslot: A year that opened in lockdown, staggered through to reopening, via a supply chain crisis and ending with Omicron: how will you look back on 2021?

Mark Jepp: In a word Frustrating. Frustrated by the way the whole Covid pandemic has been handled by Boris the Buffoon and his band and lackies;

Frustrated by the lack of understanding overall by the Government and the lack of clarity in all that they do; Frustrated by the way the mainstream media have reported all of this without the context of how the various restrictions have impacted people in others many ways; Frustrated nothing else seems to mater other than Covid in terms of the health (and sanity) of the public; Frustrated that life seems to have been needlessly impacted by supply chain issue that in my view have been caused by Brexit; and finally Frustrated that we missed so many chances to deliver bingo to our customers!!

Coinslot: We’ve had five months since re-opening, what were your highlights of the year?

Mark Jepp: The highlight for me was just simply being able to open our doors again and welcoming our fantastically loyal customers back into the clubs as well as having the chance again to work alongside some of the great people Majestic Bingo employs.

The overall highlight is that as a company we survived and at some point I hope to go on and thrive by delivering different ways to play bingo and other entertainment events in our clubs

Coinslot: 2021 has been a major challenge to the way our businesses operate. How have you risen to this challenge and what new developments are you introducing to rebuild and strengthen your operation?

Mark Jepp: We have risen to that challenge for sure, whether it be developing our online offer to be more in-line with our retail business, developing new games with our partners such as Willow with one of the results being our award winning Don’t Find The Nine Game (with more on the way), so watch this space, building on new more efficient and effective ways to communicate with our customers by working with NRM to create an industry leading app.

We have also spent time and resource on developing our club teams to develop World Class Customer service using an external company called 10 Hospitality that links into our own ethos perfectly.

We have also spent time developing our CLUBINGO sub-brand that has so far delivered a number of sell out after-hours events in our clubs ranging from Ultrabeat DJ sets, to hosted fun bingo sessions to 90s boyband FIVE

Coinslot: What are you looking or hoping for in 2022 and what’s on your New Year’s wish list?

Mark Jepp: Hope that we learn to live with Covid without all the chopping by the UK Government and changing that undermines consumer and customer confidence. I hope that some of our older customers have the confidence to return at some point and once again meet their friends and family for a great session of bingo.

I hope that we can continue to deliver some great new bingo games and concepts for our customers whatever generation they may come from and my New Year’s Wish is that bingo is back as a great source of fun and entertainment …it may even come back in vogue.
