A new £100m casino could be built next to Leicester Square in London.

Westminster City Council is considering building a high-rise mixed use development, including a casino, on one corner of the famous square.

The site is currently houses 35 flats and a car park. However, the building has been in a state of disrepair for a number of years.

The city council had previously discussed selling the property, while plans to build a three-screen cinema were also put forward as one of six options for the building back in 2017.

The local authority suggests that the development – which would comprise a hotel, cinema and casino, alongside 24 new affordable homes – could help further boost tourism to the West End.

Leicester Square is already home to The Hippodrome Casino, Horizons Casino and Empire Casino.

A consultation assessing all the options for the building ended on 15 September. If the development receives planning permission, the council has said it hopes to start work on the project by 2025.
