The MP for Blackpool South has called on Chancellor Rishi Sunak to cut business rates by 20 percent and increase taxes levied on online operators, in a bid to prevent small businesses on UK high streets collapsing post-pandemic.

Scott Benton made the comments following a recent WPI Strategy report that revealed the highest retail vacancy rates are “overwhelmingly” likely to be in areas most in need of “levelling up” – such as his own constituency.

“We are urging the Chancellor to urgently reduce the level of business rates, or, what we should really call it – a shops tax – to give those businesses with a physical presence the chance to compete against the likes of Amazon,” Benton told The Express. “We must find ways to breathe new life back into our high streets.”
