MERKUR Initiative was launched in order to provide support to those smaller local charities that make a huge difference to the communities they serve. Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice Raise the Roof appeal fits that description perfectly.
The Raise the Roof appeal at Birmingham St Mary’s Hospice is one of the first recipients of the MERKUR Initiative programme which has been created to enable venue teams and their customers to nominate charities and good causes that undertake invaluable work in their local communities. Raise The Roof, one of a projected 50 good causes that will be supported by MERKUR UK over the next 12-months, urgently needs funds to replace the roof on its Inpatient Unit.
Explaining the challenge facing the Hospice, which has provided outstanding care to local people since it was established in 1979, Deputy Matron, Rachel Shuttleworth said: “We’ve been told the old roof on our Inpatient Unit has badly deteriorated over the last year, becoming so bad that it won’t last another winter.
“It’s the worst possible timing, just as we’re coming out of the pandemic, the most difficult time in over 40 years of looking after local people. But we’ve been told quite clearly that, unless we completely replace the roof, we may have to close some or all of our Inpatient Unit bedrooms when the bad weather returns in the winter.
“We couldn’t have foreseen this – and this sudden new cost puts a huge strain on our finances. To see the other side of the pandemic, to have delivered so many special moments under this roof, but then to have to shut beds because we can’t keep patients warm and dry would be just awful.”
She added: “The new roof will cost £13.50 per square foot – but it will be so much better. We will be able to put all the buckets away for good, and each room will also be so much warmer, it’ll mean a better environment for our patients and their families – and less extra work and stress for us.
There’s not a nurse or staff member here that doesn’t understand the impact of donations and I thank you on behalf of all of them.”
