Five major tourism businesses joined forces with Blackpool Council last weekend in order to help young people find work at a Jobcentre Plus jobs fair, organised as part of the government’s £2bn Kickstart scheme.

As a result of the event, over 65 young people were offered paid, six month placements at employers including Merlin Entertainments, Blackpool Pleasure Beach, Blackpool Zoo, The Grand Theatre and the Winter Gardens.

“Kickstart gives customers on Universal Credit a chance to gain real experience and get their foot on the jobs ladder,” customer service leader for Blackpool Jobcentre Lorraine Townson told the Gazette.

“Seeing young people enter the Jobcentre looking nervous but leaving with a smile knowing they had been offered a paid opportunity was amazing.”

The Kickstart scheme supports 16-24-year-olds at risk of long-term unemployment, providing potential employers with wages and start-up expenses.

As part of the scheme, the town’s tourism businesses have been working closely with Blackpool Council to provide openings for local workers.

Commenting on the recent jobs fair, studio supervisor for Merlin Entertainments Emma Meehan said “it was an absolutely fantastic day.”

“I met so many lovely people and I can’t wait to get all these new starters on board, they are absolutely amazing. It’s been brilliant, busy, so many interviews.”
