Families “rolled up in their droves” to visit Clacton Pier’s new observation wheel last weekend, as the 33m attraction was unveiled to the public.
Though work only began on Tuesday, the wheel was fully installed within three days by the Elegant Wheel Company, with riders taking the first spin on Saturday.
“There were young children right up to great grandparents and it was great to see them having fun in the sun on the Clacton Pier Wheel Experience,” said pier director Billy Ball.
“Our wheel provides fantastic views of the coastline, countryside and neighbouring towns and we want as many people as possible to have the chance to make the most of our latest offering.” Planning permission for the 24-gondola ride was granted by Tendring District Council last week, almost a year after initial plans for the wheel were submitted.
As well as local families and residents, Ball added all NHS staff will be able to have a free ride on the wheel for the rest of June on production of their NHS card.
“This is a s mall thank you to them for the incredible sacrifice they have made for all of us over the past year or so.”
