A proposal has been lodged with Rochdale Council to relocate Jeffries Amusements in Middleton Gardens to a larger unit opposite, granting the AGC twice its existing floorspace.

Once converted into an arcade, the former Virgin Money site would “maintain the vitality” of the shopping centre, with the guarantee of a window display and traditional shopfront.

“The proposal is in a major town centre shopping area,” said a planning statement from agent Roger Etchells “It could not be better located in terms of accessibility by all means of transport (foot, cycle, car and public transport).”

“Premises such as this are no noisier than a shop or the previous use that occupied the premises. They would be suitable neighbours on the street in this location just as they have been opposite for over 30 years.”

If Jeffries Amusements’ move to the new 288 sq metre unit is approved, its former location is likely to be converted to retail premises, with an application for a change of use also under consideration by the council’s planning committee.

Commenting on the relocation, Etchells described the former bank as ideal for a “shopper orientated amusement centre.”

“It is generally accepted that this kind of establishment attracts the same type of person as nearby shops. It also attracts them in similar numbers.”
