South Yorkshire Police has informed Doncaster Council of a raid which took place recently at Shabir’s Restaurant on East Laith Gate in Doncaster, revealing an illegal casino operation on the venue’s first floor.

Officers had been tipped off that the upstairs function room was hosting “40 to 50 people” every Sunday, and on entering discovered a “typical casino” set up, with a number of people at gaming tables and machines.

“Upon realising we were there, they began to panic and rush out through what I now know is a fire exit,” reported PC Parker. “The group, which was in excess of nine people, managed to escape as I blocked the entrance to the room from the kitchen area.”

“Given what I saw on my initial entrance into the room and what I observed as I walked around, I have no doubt in my mind that this room had been operating as a casino with the knowledge of the restaurant below.”

Following the investigation, council licensing officers visited the venue, and will now decide whether to amend the premises licence conditions, exclude elements from the scope of the licence, or remove the designated supervisor, or whether to suspend or revoke the licence.
