A former Buzz Bingo on Weymouth’s Crescent Street that closed last year could be set for revival as a bingo hall, after Brown Leisure submitted plans to reopen the venue.

The operator, trading under the name Leo Leisure, put the proposals before Dorset Council last week, noting the success of its similar ventures up and down the south coast. “Brown Leisure Limited has had experience of operating bingo clubs for many years,” said the planning statement. “The company, which has clubs in Eastbourne, Eastleigh and Ryde, Isle of Wight, wishes to revive the bingo club and its entertainment and applies for licences to enable it to do that.”

“This will reduce the number of people who may be otherwise on the streets in the area looking for entertainment.”

The application is for a licence to operate between 10am and midnight, and includes “potential quiz nights and karaoke” as well as live music.

Buzz Weymouth closed in 2020 as one of the 26 nationwide venues shut by the company.

“We know how disappointing this news will be,” said CEO Chris Matthews at the time. “Especially for those of our customers who are losing their local club, and of course, our colleagues.”
