The vision to bring the Eden Project to Morecambe and reimagine the seaside resort is a collaborative initiative that’s won the approval of the town’s campaigning school students – all it needs now is £70m from the government.

School students in Morecambe are working to transform the fortunes of the once thriving Lancashire resort which has fallen out of favour with tourists. They have set up a campaign group, North West Youth For Eden and produced a campaign video to help convince the government to stump up the £70m in funding that’s needed to set up Eden Project North, an ambitious vision that seeks to reimagine the seaside resort, in the process delivering far-reaching environmental, social and economic ambitions based on a connection with the natural world.

Eden Project NorthA version of Cornwall’s world-famous tourist attraction and research hub, Eden Project North will be a ticketed, integrated, experiential attraction combining exhibits, performance, learning, play, immersive experiences, world-class horticulture, art, food, beverage and retail spaces. The overarching objective is to make Morecambe Bay a place that is both understood and celebrated.

The prospectus states: “We want Eden Project North to be transformational for Morecambe and the wider region. Our experience of opening and running Eden Project Cornwall tells us that we can attract millions of visitors, with all the economic and community benefits that will bring. We will ensure that those economic benefits are felt locally.

“By connecting Eden Project North to the local community, we hope to support positive social change. And by encouraging visitors to be curious and creative, we hope to inspire new ways of engaging with the natural landscape; to see themselves as part of the natural world not apart from it. This has never been more important.”

It continued: “The Eden team will be working closely with regional partners – the Lancashire Enterprise Partnership, Lancaster University, Lancashire County Council and Lancaster City Council – and local people to ensure this venue truly embodies the place that has inspired it. Eden Project North aims to help Morecambe reclaim its position as a resort for the 21st Century.”
