The campaign by Weston Grand Pier to bring free parking to the town’s seafront has finally seen success, with the pier’s owner saying she is “delighted” by new measures to cut charges after 6pm.

The initiative was announced by North Somerset Council for Marine Parade, Uphill, Royal Sands and Clifton Sands, as part of efforts to support the town’s night-time economy and ensure visitors can stay longer.

“We have been campaigning for a relaxation on evening parking for our visitors and local guests for many years,” pier owner Michelle Michael told The Weston Mercury.

“We are delighted that this is something that is now seen as beneficial to the survival of our seaside town, and I am sure will be seen as giving something back to our local community to encourage them to use the wonderful resources on their doorstep.”

Commenting on the announcement, Cllr Mark Canniford said “we must do all we can to support our local businesses.”
