Although we never closed and have always remained open, this period has allowed us to complete our repairs, refurbishment and preparation of on-site and off-site equipment much sooner than anticipated.
We have also taken the opportunity to increase and evaluate our stock of spare parts and components; a task that is normally conducted during off season. We have referenced the Bacta risk assessment template and have implemented the extra recommendations where necessary. We are a compact and flexible team and our offices, workshops and stores are spacious relative to the people present in them. Fortunately, it has been easy to include the additional protocols and procedures to our workplace.
However, the big change we are implementing is to alter the stubbornly traditional 9-5, Mon-Fri work pattern associated with companies such as ours in the B2B sector that are not customer facing.
We can now work to a staggered and modified 7 day a week rota system which will allow everybody to work more efficiently but which will not undermine our commitment to exceptional levels of customer service. In fact, I think these changes will enhance service levels and response times.
The government has laid out its guidelines for businesses to reopen and there are understandably and worryingly many to be concerned about because they might prove difficult to implement.
But, (at current going to press) after speaking to friends, family and business colleagues, we all agree that the 2m distancing rule is very harsh. If this can be reduced, as is the case in most European countries, then it would be a significant boost to the leisure, catering and hospitality industry and would provide a much needed kickstart to confidence.
But there’s also one point I want to make: I want to pay tribute to the fabulous work Bacta has been doing representing our sector. They are our point of reference and are tirelessly lobbying our cause. Plus, we have been all too aware recently about the integrity of news reporting worldwide: Independent, impartial, truthful reporting is vital. HIGH AND LOWS OF LOCKDOWN:
Highs – coming to work on my bicycle or scooter with barely no traffic on the road and then coming home early. Lows – seeing daily reports of the unnecessary and unexpected loss of loved ones and the personal family sufferings associated with each loss. It could have happened to myself or my family.
