The winter means quieter times and, in some cases, closure for the UK’s amusement arcades – but owners are being urged to remain vigilant and not take a gamble with their business.
Arcades up and down the country have shut up shop or are experiencing minimal footfall in the late winter months.
This quieter period brings the opportunity for owners to assess the business and what work needs to be done in the run-up to the busy summer ahead – but one leisure specialist is urging businesses not to overlook the importance of robust insurance cover.
“The start of the new year is a time for many arcades to take stock and ensure their businesses, be it the building itself, the machines, or security systems, are all in good working order,” said David Still, of insurance broker Lycetts. “Owners should bear in mind that up-to-date insurance policies are an important aspect of this ‘maintenance’ work – and that insurance providers should be informed of any changes being made to the business, as it could impact any claim made in the future.”
Still said the quieter low season is an ideal time for arcade owners to check their current policy wordings for any specific endorsements, such as the need for any permits or risk assessments for work being carried out, and reminded businesses to ensure their electrical certificates are up- to-date.
“Arcade owners should recalculate the cost of replacing machines, so that they have sufficient cover, and also remember to increase their cover, should they purchase any new kit ahead of high season,”added Still.
“Ensuring the CCTV and security systems are up-to-date and in good working order is also important.
“Many arcades are housed in older buildings, so it imperative that arcades – particularly those that are closed over the winter period – are checked regularly for signs of disrepair or damage, such as leaking water pipes. Roofs may need the guttering checked yearly, under endorsements of the build- ing’s insurance policy,so ensure to check for this.”
