Kongs has its eye on an empire state.

A former nightclub site in Birmingham is to be trans- formed into a retro arcade- themed gaming club and bar. Kongs, as it will be known, will be the third venue to bare such a name after the operator found success in Bristol and later Cardiff.

The retro-arcade and bar offering is opening in one of Birmingham’s most important and iconic city centre spaces later this year. Birmingham’s impressive 1 Victoria Square will house classics such as Nintendo’s Donkey Kong, Namco’s Pac Man and Midway’s Mortal Kombat. Its new home will also feature table tennis, table football, a modern food offering, craft beers, cocktails and wines, as well as a host of local DJs.

Kongs is replacing liquidated nightclub and cocktail bar Chameleon. The opening is being described by local media as a ‘move away from traditional nightclub drinking and towards alternative entertainment.’ The city is already enjoying an alternative/retro resurgence. Pinball site Tilt continues to prosper alongside retro arcade games at Lane7 bowling, Ghetto Golf and Serve Ping Pong.

Kongs was founded in Bristol in 2014 and opened a second site in Cardiff two years later.
