Peterhead’s Gala Bingo Hall is to close its doors in the new year, after the building and adjoining nightclub, Drummers Bar, were sold at auction to a private buyer.

A spokeswoman for Gala said: “The decision to sell the club has not been an easy one, and does not in anyway reflect on the performance of our management team and colleagues at the club, as they have delivered a first class service to our customers over the years.”

Gala said that while the last day of trading will be on 3 January, a final event will be held to wave goodbye to customers.

The venue made headlines in 2009 as a stage for UK songstress Alexandra Burke, who performed a gig in the port because of her sponsorship with mobile phone company Nokia.

Of the 13 staff that work at the hall, the spokeswoman added: “Every effort will be made to seek redeployment opportunities for our affected employees.”
