Operators in Clacton might see their town become the next Monaco as the seaside resort bids to host a round of the FIA Formula E championships.

The decision to bid came after the town’s council gave permission for public roads to be closed and used as racetracks.

The proposed Formula E racetrack would surround Clacton Pier and numerous amusement arcades, bringing an opportunity for increased footfall to the local businesses.

Tanya Ferguson, the Tourism and Culture counsellor at Tendring District Council, said: “There is no doubt that hosting such an exciting event would be a massive draw and bring people into the area to boost the local economy.”

“Our talks are at an early stage,” Ferguson continued, “but we are very interested in the prospect and hope the idea can be developed.”

The Formula E series started in 2014, and is being held in Paris, New York and Montreal.
