Blackpool Pleasure Beach has revealed the name of the new £16.25m rollercoaster, Icon, which will open next year.

The ride, which had gone under the working title of ‘Construction 2018’ until last week, was officially christened ‘Icon’ in a dramatic trailer published on the amusement park’s YouTube channel.

The video gave visitors a computer-generated preview of what they could expect from the rollercoaster, which will weave through 15 other rides during its two-and-a-halfminute duration.

Pleasure Beach managing director Amanda Thompson said: “Icon is going to be one of the most talked about, iconic rollercoasters of the future. The name speaks for itself as it will be one of the most iconic rides on the planet.

“This is Blackpool Pleasure Beach’s biggest investment to date and will have a real impact on the town and region as a whole.”

When it opens, Icon will propel riders at the same levels of acceleration as an F1 driver, both at the start and at its midpoint, reaching speeds of up to 80 miles per hour.

Pleasure Beach deputy managing director Nick Thompson said: “After over 43,000 hours of planning and with the first phase of construction work complete, we’re thrilled to unveil the name of this incredible new attraction and to provide rollercoaster enthusiasts with a first look at Icon.”
