Church of England votes to reduce FOBTs maximum stakes.
The Church of England has unanimously passed a motion urging the government to bring forward proposals to change maximum stakes on betting terminals from £100 to £2.
Alan Smith, the Bishop of St Albans, said: “We are not debating harmless betting machines but a particular form of betting which has caused huge suffering.”
Carolyn Harris MP, chair of the FOBT APPG, said: “The Church of England General Synod joins hundreds of MPs, 93 local authorities campaign groups and industry bodies in calling for stake reduction on FOBTs.
The Government must act in the forthcoming Review of Stakes and Prizes to reduce the stake, it simply cannot be put off any longer.
It is the only action to take for a Government which takes Social Responsibility seriously.”
The Synod have also called on politicians to grant local authorities the power to make provisions about the number and locations of FOBTs.
