Mecca Bingo has overhauled its number calls to include a number of modern pop culture references in a bid to appeal to younger players.

The bingo chain, which operates 86 clubs across the UK, allowed members to vote on what traditional number calls they wanted replaced by more relevant offerings. The new modernised calls are currently being rolled out on a trial basis in clubs.

Caroline Webb, spokesperson for Mecca Bingo, said: “The references to modern culture phenomena and trends, such as hipsters and Tider, and massive stars like Adele and Little Mix are likely to appeal to the increasingly younger crowd which can be found playing bingo.”

She added the actual use of specific number calls is now rare in the UK bingo halls and she is hoping that the trial of the modernised versions will increase the excitement in venues.

Garnering particular attention are “Tinder date” for 8 and “Netflix and chill” for 69 which feature alongside more wholesome celebrity references such as “Adele” for 25 and the Taylor Swift inspired number 22. The added generational relevance is a response to the rising number of younger players in bingo venues.

“With bingo attracting record numbers of younger players, we wanted to tap into the resurgence of interest in the game, and what better way than by refreshing one of the most iconic things about bingo – its calls for the numbers.”

Mecca claims 16 percent of its customers are now aged between 18-24, which is now double the percentage the age group represented in 2013. The chain’s bingo clubs receive on average 11m visits a year, with many more playing online.
