The Royal Mint has launched a new website for the New Pound Coin, featuring a list of important dates regarding the circulation of the new currency.
Once the coin is released to the general public in March 2017, there will be a short period of co-circulation where businesses are allowed accept both the old and the new £1 coins in a transaction. During this time, businesses should make arrangements to upgrade their equipment and let customers know which coins will be accepted. Co-circulation will end in September 2017, and businesses will no longer be obliged to accept or distribute the old £1 coin from customers. From this point on, the round £1 coin will be demonetised.
