Plans for a £36.7m water park and leisure centre to replace Coventry Sports and Leisure Centre have been given the go-ahead.

Coventry City Council approved the facility, which will sit on the site of Spire House and Christchurch House next to Christchurch spire, under delegated orders – meaning it did not have to get planning committee approval.

The council-owned facility is scheduled to open in late 2018, with construction work set to begin in spring next year, 2017.

Michael Hall, partner of Faulkner-Browns architects, designers of the site, said: “We are delighted to be associated with the creation of such a distinctive leisure destination.

“Every so often, a project comes along which is a game-changer in the way that people think about, and engage with, the leisure experience, and Coventry’s water park will be one such project.”
